MACRA awards winning students in Letter writing competition

MACRA today presented prizes to three winning students in
the 2020 International Letter Writing Competition for Young People.

This is an annual competition organized by the Universal
Postal Union (UPU), a United Nations body with headquarters in Geneva,
Switzerland and this year’s theme was “Write a message to an adult about the
world we live in”.

A form four student at St Andrews Mission Secondary School
in Mulanje Florence Mlenga came first and went away with a cash prize of K500,
000. On second position is Tinashe Mphalare a form two student at Tione Private
Secondary School in Blantyre and he went away with a cash prize of K300, 000
while another form two student from Target Private Secondary School in Blantyre
Evance Kazunguza came third and went away with a cash prize of K200,

All the students also went away with laptops and laptop bags
and their schools went away with a desktop and a printer.

Speaking at the ceremony, Principal Secretary for Education Mrs. Chikondano Mussa said the competition was thought provoking and ideal for our children who are experiencing so many developments both good and bad.

“In order for the children to come up with their letters
they had to look around them and look at different aspects of life affecting
them. They also had to choose the right vocabulary that perfectly described
their world,” she said.

On his part MACRA’s Director General Henry Shamu said the
competition was an excellent way of making young people aware of the important
role postal services play in the societies.
