Southern Africa Youth Project was founded in the Diepsloot Community, Johannesburg, South Africa. 

Background of Diepsloot Township

Diepsloot was established in 1996 by a group of immigrants who came to Johannesburg City to seek greener pastures. It was mainly a Peach Farm where majority of dwellers were working on the farms. Other people would work in the nearby towns such as Fourways, Bryanston, Midrand and Kyalami.

Founding of the Diepsloot Township

Diepsloot has over 200 000 whom 80% of the dwellers are youth who are unemployed and have experienced brutal poverty and gender based violence. Diepsloot has grown from a group of 10 people who were squartered in a shack to over 10 000 yards with over population of 40 people per yard who are unemployed and have to create some sort of survival. Through all these challenges Southern Africa Youth Project – Diepsloot was founded in 2005 (9 years after the community was established to address the socio economic challenges the community face. 

Establishment of Southern Africa Youth Project -Diepsloot

Southern Africa Youth Project though its strategy to do development is based on empowering local communities. This is where the founder, Mr Neftaly Malatjie have founded the organisation that would address Africa’s large challenges. This center is the main lab for the organisation as it is based near the organisation’s head office. 

Part of the programmes that are being offered in this community are Advisory and Referral, Skills to Succeed, HIV/AIDS empowerment, Gender Based Violence, Work Readiness, Information Technology, Digital Skills, Programming, Coding, Computer, Life Skills, Social Services, Health and Welfare and Enterprise Development.

The organisation works with over 15 secondary schools from this community providing its Services to learners in schools
